Another change of mind. As Solicitor General, Fried hailed the Supreme Court's decision in Bowers v. Hardwick, the case that rejected a challenge to Georgia's sodomy law. But later in life, he hailed the decision in Lawrence v. Texas, which reversed Bowers, and was generally supportive of LGBT rights. He was my Jurisprudence professor at HLS in the mid 1970s. As many have said, even then, before his stint as Solicitor General, he was courteous and friendly to everyone regardless of their politics. I wrote a term paper for that class advocating the repeal of sodomy laws. He didn't blink and gave me a good grade.
What a lovely tribute, David. My husband had Professor Fried at HLS, and he’s always said that he really learned to think like a lawyer in his Contracts class.

Oh wow, so interesting—I did not know this!

Thank you for helping remind us of why we should feel a sense of great loss and of how we can help in some small measure to make up for a great loss.
Beautiful tribute, David--thank you.
