Uh, maybe I'm too cynical, but isn't this... predictable? These students set themselves against the political right, and then made an embarrassing tactical blunder, falling afoul of free speech. Of course their chosen enemies are going to capitalize, that's simply how politics works.
And to some extent, it's how politics should work; I don't have to like the right to feel schadenfreude here. The students fell afoul of important norms, and their enemies will capitalize on that, and their chosen causes will suffer; even if their cause is just in some sense, those consequences are helpful for defending those important norms and making violations of them less likely in the future. Whether you think Ted Cruz is Satan or Gabriel, that equation still runs the same.
